Ellsworth
Margarete Whitney passed away peacefully Aug. 2, 2021, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor. Margarete was born Dec. 30, 1926, in Poland, daughter of Galina Bakiewicz. She moved to Maracaibo, Venezuela, as a young woman with her mother and brother, where she met her future husband, Ivan Whitney of Ellsworth, who was working for Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Venezuela. Margarete and Ivan were married Feb. 14, 1958, in Maracaibo. They moved to Bangor in the early ’60s with their son Gene, then on to Lewiston, Glens Falls, N.Y., Augusta and then to their “camp” in Trenton.
Margarete loved entertaining and cooking for her family and friends. After the death of her husband in 2010, Margarete moved to an apartment in Ellsworth. Margarete is survived by her son, Gene Whitney, and his wife, Laurie, of Limerick; brother Nick Bakiewicz of Toronto; grandson Matthew Whitney and his wife, Faith, of Buckfield; and great-granddaughters Kaitlyn and Adriana Whitney.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Ellsworth Lodge of Elks in the Ivan Whitney Function Hall, 317 High St., Ellsworth. Burial will be at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta, at a later date.
