
Mount Desert
Albert “Al” John Vollmer Jr, 85, passed away at Birch Bay on Aug. 5, 2021. He was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Ridley Park, Pa., the son of Albert J. and Elizabeth (Peyre-Ferry) Vollmer Sr.
He graduated from Glen-Nor High School in Glenolden, Pa., in 1954. Prior to Al’s graduation he won the Southeast Pennsylvania District Individual Bullseyes Championship by knocking off 18 perfect bullseyes in 20 shots, scoring 218 points of a possible 220. He then served for four years in the U.S. Coast Guard in Southwest Harbor. Al married Norma Richardson almost 64 years ago.
He worked at the J.W. Silk Plumbing Co. for four years and became co-owner for 10 years. He owned and operated the Acadia Cottages on Echo Lake for 10 years before going to the Bar Harbor Water Co. in 1973 and retired as superintendent of the water company in 2001.
Al was a 50-year member of the Mount Desert Masonic Lodge No. 140 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Somesville Fire Department. Al enjoyed lots of projects, boating, fishing, hunting and building our camp on Hopkins Pond. He especially enjoyed his time with his grandchildren and lobstering with Michael and his many fishing and hunting trips to northern Maine with John and Michael. He had heart surgery in June 2003 and went on a successful moose hunting trip in October.
Al is survived by his wife, Norma; son John Vollmer and wife, Kathleen Silva, all of Mount Desert; his granddaughter Chelsea Vollmer and her fiancé Shawn Gallano of Bridgewater, Mass., and grandson Michael Vollmer of Mount Desert; two great-grandchildren, Emelia and Owynn; and two nephews, David Benson of Arizona and Daniel Benson and wife, Maureen, of Delaware. He was predeceased by his parents, a son, Albert Jay Vollmer, and a sister, Elizabeth Benson.
Graveside services will be held 11 am, Monday, Aug. 16, 2021, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
