L. Carroll Lurvey, 85, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2021, at the place he loved the most, his camp on the quiet shore of Little Webb Pond in Waltham. Carroll was born Sept. 4, 1935, in Bar Harbor, the son of Lloyd W. and Myra (Kief) Lurvey.
Carroll grew up in the town of Bar Harbor and loved Mount Desert Island. In addition to being charismatic, he was known for his athletic ability on the football field, basketball court and baseball diamond. In 1955, his high school basketball team won Bar Harbor’s first state championship, and Carroll was named MVP of the Eastern Maine Tournament. After graduating from Bar Harbor High School in 1955, Carroll continued his love of basketball at Gorham State Teachers College, where he earned a degree in education in 1959 while setting the school’s basketball scoring record. He loved telling tales of being the first lifeguard at Sand Beach and his adventures in Acadia National Park. Friends and memories from these years lasted a lifetime.
While at Gorham, Carroll met and married June Collins, with whom he had five children. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and bird dogs and canoeing with his daughters in the early days. He taught and coached in Stonington and Portland schools for a number of years and later started his own insurance business. He would also manage Mt. Whittier ski resort in New Hampshire before returning home to Maine and settling at his family’s camp on Little Webb Pond.
A spiritual and inquisitive person, he enjoyed putting ideas down on paper and sharing his insights with friends and neighbors. Carroll was a caring dog owner, and always had a faithful dog at his side. Carroll loved rambling the back roads out to Magic Bridge, Lurvey Spring and the Fountain of Youth.
Carroll will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Stephen (Chip), Mark, Shelley, Kym and Kirk, 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many others. His family members include son Stephen (Chip) Lurvey and his children Stephen and Heidi; Mark and Spring Lurvey and their sons Hunter and Blake; Shelley (Lurvey) and Lloyd Haller and their children Kaylee, Nadya and Anton; Kym Lurvey-Bedard and Christian Bedard and son Josh; Kirk and Claudine Lurvey and their children Taylor and Jacob.
Private graveside services will be held at the Town Hill Cemetery. To honor his memory, please consider feeding ducks, squirrels or any other small creatures in your neighborhood.
