Carrie Mae McBride Bishop – It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of our wonderful wife and Mother on June 25 in her 84th year. Born in Long Beach, California in 1936. Daughter to Wiley Brown McBride and Doris Elizabeth Collins McBride.

Beloved wife and best friend of 65 years to Michael Edward Bishop. Loved mother of Michael Ward (Brenda) Bishop, Mark McBride (Heather) Bishop and Sheri Elizabeth Bishop. Proud grandmother of Leah Mae (Justin) Bishop Pascal, Jenna Cameron (Craig) Leger, and Kelly Dawn (Sonya) Bishop and great grandmother to Angus, Bobbi and Joannah.

Carrie was predeceased by her parents, son Mark, and sisters Mary Okulski and Anne Vanderburg.

After high school Carrie joined the Air Force. She was stationed at McGuire Airforce Base in New Jersey, assigned as Loadmaster on a 4-engine passenger jet. She had some wonderful visits to Europe during this assignment and was very proud of her military service. This was just the beginning of her adventurous life though as she met and married a Navy man, Mike, in 1957. Carrie had a special talent of making every new place a home. From a navy base in California to a crofters cottage in Scotland.

Above all Carrie was a woman who believed in dreams and the importance of making them a reality. Our family immigrated to Canada in 1974, living in an old farmhouse on Cape Breton Island where Mom learned to cook on a wood stove, build gardens and wrangle chickens and goats. It was here she began to follow a passion for weaving that had begun in Scotland. But Carrie and Mike were just getting started. The next dream was building and living aboard a 42ft steel schooner. The 12 years spent building and sailing the S/V Tuugaalik on the ICW and the Gulf of Mexico were special and resulted in lifelong friendships with fellow boat people. They made the move to Orland, Maine in 2003, fulfilling another dream to live near the ocean, evoking the areas of Scotland and Cape Breton that felt most like home.

Carrie lived her life with curiosity, energy, kindness, and compassion and was an inspiration to those who knew her well. True to her wishes Carrie died at home surrounded by her family. We offer special thanks to our Hospice workers Allie and Chrissie for their care and compassion.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral services, but her family will gather together to celebrate her life when we are able. Carrie, Mom you will always be missed and never forgotten…

Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home Bucksport (mitchelltweedie-young.com)
