Elliott B. Mitchell, age 77, of Rockport passed away peacefully on Feb. 17, 2021, at Windward Gardens in Camden. Born in Bar Harbor on April 19, 1943, Elliot was the son to the late Llewellyn B. and Willett (Pumphrey) Mitchell.
Attending local schools, Elliott graduated from Mount Desert Island High School in 1962. He was very active in sports and played basketball for the MDI Mustangs for four years, playing on the championship teams. Elliot also played with several other teams.
In 1963, Elliott married the love of his life, Sandra Upham, at the Rockport Baptist Church. At this time, Elliott went on to work for Goodyear Tire Co. Serving in many capacities throughout his career there, Elliott was transferred throughout much of New England. He started out in Portland as a credit manager, moving on to store manager in Providence, R.I., and Keene, N.H., then transferred to Massachusetts as a tire salesman and then became a sales executive and retired in 2002 after 37 years of employment.
After his retirement, Elliott and Sandra moved to Rockport Village, where they made their home and where he enjoyed cruising the Penobscot Bay waters.
Other than his parents, Elliott was predeceased by his son Brian Mitchell, mother- and father-in-law Dorothy and Russell Upham, sister-in-law Patricia Upham Martino and cousin Merlynda Hault.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra Upham Mitchell, daughter Leslie Mitchell, uncle Robert Mitchell, aunt Ruth Mitchell, and their daughters Suzanne and Beth, cousins DeeDee Shields, Stephen Shields, brother-in-law Cushman Blethen and his wife, Noreen, of Florida and Maine and sister-in-law Christine Baker of Massachusetts. In addition, Elliott was proud and honored to be like a father to Kim Albon Wilson and her husband, Bob, Cynthia Churchey and her husband, Doug, R.J. Godbout, Gerry Coehelo, Randy Hocking and his wife, Cheryl. He was “Grandpa” to Jessica Shamutz, Robert Albon and his wife, Danielle, Ryan Wilson and his wife, Kerry, Randy Wilson and his partner Alissa, Skylar Godbout, Kevin Wilson and his wife and Krysten Wilson.
He will be missed by several close friends. He was loved by all who knew him.
A celebration of Elliott’s life will be announced in June at Seaview Cemetery in Rockport.
