Ellsworth

Robert Nelson McKenney of Ellsworth made his journey home on Nov. 11, 2020, while at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, at age 70. He was born in Lincoln to Hiram Nelson McKenney and Helen May (Royal) McKenney of Lee on Dec. 13, 1949.

He lived in Lee for most of his childhood. The McLeod family was like a second family to him, and Albert McLeod remained one of his best friends throughout his life.

Bob was a Vietnam veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, he lived in Winn until the ’90s, when he moved to Ellsworth to be nearer to his sister. Patti.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Herman and sister June and several cousins. Bob is survived by his sister, Patricia A. McKenney of Clinton, and by his cousin, Carolyn Bright of Blue Hill, for whom he had a warm affection. To Patti, he was her hero. Bob is remembered fondly by Albert McLeod, now residing in Webster Plantation, and by Larry Mitchell of Hancock, who was of help to Bob during his last few days.

Bob took correspondence courses in television and computer repair and was always ready to help his friends with their electronic problems. One notable example is that for years he helped his friend, Earl Clark, put up an outside Christmas light display in the town of Winn — a display that was known by people as far as 60 miles away.

There will be a military service at the Acadia National Cemetery in Jonesboro on May 28 at 1 p.m., followed by a celebration of life, the location of which will be announced later.

Donations in Robert’s honor should be made to the veterans’ organization of your choosing.
