Craig Schoppe, 72, died unexpectedly Dec. 22, 2020, at home in his sleep. He was born in 1948, in Bernardston, Mass., the son of Shirley Irving and Lois Gertrude (Spear) Schoppe. Craig graduated from the Worcester Art Museum School in Worcester, Mass., in 1969.

Craig made Downeast Maine his home in 1974, homesteading, working as a builder and raising a family. In 1983, he co-founded KitchenWorks, an architectural design business. He was a woodworker, designer, gardener, chef, artist, musician, photographer, traveler, activist, jokester and more. Craig volunteered countless hours with local nonprofits, including Everybody Eats!, Washington Hancock Community Agency, Schoodic Arts for All and the Downeast Salmon Federation.

Craig is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Laury; children Mitya, Martha, Mira, Owen, Lisa and Brad and their partners Cora and Nate; three grandchildren, Rory, Michelina and Zachary; sister Nan Suydam and her husband, Alan; niece Christa and nephew Eric; and his brother Hugh (Don Vanasse). An outdoor celebration of Craig’s life, the last day of which was winter solstice, will be held for family and friends on the summer solstice.

In honor of his memory, please be kind, practice humility, tell a joke, express yourself through art and labor and feed a neighbor. Donations may be made to Everybody Eats! through Downeast Community Partners, 248 Bucksport Road, Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
