Marcia Hosking Dorr, 85, passed from this world peacefully at her home on Nov. 3, 2020. Marcia was born in Boston, Mass., to Thelma Savage Hosking and Henry Hosking of Islington, Mass., on April 16, 1935.
She spent her early childhood years in Massachusetts and moved with her parents and brother Henry Foster Hosking to Sullivan in 1947, where her parents operated Flanders Bay Cabins and tearoom. She went to Sullivan Elementary School and later was in the first graduating class of Sumner High School in 1953. She first worked at Mount Desert Island Hospital as a radiologist’s secretary. Through a friend at the hospital she was introduced to a young man named Darrold Dorr, who soon fell in love with her. It was a match that lasted over 60 years, as they were married October of 1960. Marcia and Darrold loved Bar Harbor and MDI and then bought their first home and started a family, which consisted of sons Shane, David and Chris. As Bar Harbor continued to grow, they bought a parcel of land, built a new home, and moved to Town Hill, which became their longtime home. During the years there were many dinner parties, cookouts with the Norwoods and Hamors, and made the Town Hill years very special.
Marcia worked as an assistant clerk of courts at the Bar Harbor District Court for a time and then moved on to what would be one of the great joys in her life, working in College of the Atlantic’s library. Marcia developed a deep and lasting love for the school and its community during her 25 years there. She was a surrogate mom for multitudes of students and welcomed them into her home and family. Whether it was helping students track down obscure books for their research, performing with the COA chorus or just simply chatting with any and all, her love for COA was clear.
After their boys grew up and moved out into the world, they realized a smaller home made more sense. 2005 saw them sell the Town Hill home and they found a wonderful property they purchased in Franklin. They delighted in the wildlife; gorgeous sunrises and sunsets were often seen there. They also were regulars at the Franklin Veterans Club. Marcia also enjoyed the morning games of Scrabble with Darrold or with her dear friends Angel and Joan. She was also a member of the local Red Hat Ladies and had many wonderful adventures and road trips. Marcia even braved a solo outing on a Segway scooter that gave everyone something to talk about! Sadly, in 2014 Marcia was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and Darrold became her devoted caregiver through the ensuing years. As she slowly slipped away, she remained just as passionate and sweet. She loved her family deeply and would absolutely light up whenever they would visit.
She is survived by her husband, Darrold, of Franklin; sons, Shane of Bar Harbor, David of Mariaville; his daughter Marian of Bangor; and Christopher and wife, Regina, and their sons, Sullivan and Leo of Portland, Ore.; brother, Henry F. Hosking and wife, Janice, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and their children Kelley, Steve, Mike and Susan.
There will be a memorial service at a date to be determined.
