Ellsworth
Helen F. Dostie, 89, passed away Oct. 4, 2020, in Ellsworth. She was born in Bar Harbor, Sept. 21, 1931, the daughter of Arthur, Sr. and Florence (Thomas) Leland.
She attended her freshman year at Ellsworth High School and the next three years at Winthrop High School, graduating as valedictorian in 1950. She received many awards at graduation and also worked in the office of Goldfines Woolen Mill before graduation. Her junior-senior summer was sponsored by the American Legion to represent them at Girl’s State at the University of Maine in Orono. She and her classmate, Pauline Keith, wrote the “class ode.” Her junior year she was in Junior Prize Speaking. She also was assistant editor of the school paper, then editor-in-chief her senior year.
On Aug. 12, 1950, she married Roland Dostie of Winthrop and went to Florida and Baltimore, Md. while he was stationed there while serving in the U.S. Navy. They later settled back in Winthrop until retirement, then moved to Ellsworth. They were married 68 years. Later, Helen worked in several other offices.
She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Higgins of Bangor, and two brothers, Robert Leland and wife Laureen of Trenton and Carroll Leland and wife Gail of Bar Harbor, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Lillian Davis; Pauline Tittle; brother, Arthur Leland, Jr.
Helen was a strong lady and survived many illnesses including breast cancer. She will be missed by her close friends and family.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m., Oct. 9, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellsworth with Father Dube, celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
