Joyce Marylin (Spooner) Burrill

Joyce M Burrill, 87, died April 10, 2020, at an area nursing home. She was born Sept. 11, 1932, in Perham, the daughter of Sigrid M. Akerson and Cecil O. Spooner.

Joyce graduated from Bucksport High School in 1950 and immediately joined the United States Air Force. Joyce served her country for four years. In 1953, she married Gerald Wotton of Blue Hill. She continued to work for the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York as a secretary in various departments. Joyce and Gerald raised a family of six boys in New York. As her children reached school age, Joyce returned to work at Stewart Field Army Recruiting Office until 1973, when she returned to West Point and continued her career until retirement in 1992. Gerald passed away in 1984, and in 2002, Joyce married a high school sweetheart, Richard Burrill. She was predeceased by her husbands, her parents and four siblings, Carroll Spooner of Bar Harbor, Helen Bennett of Bucksport, Erlene Harding of Bar Harbor and Erwin Spooner of Bucksport.

Joyce loved to volunteer, helped in the part-time care of foster infants, was an officer for the American Legion and a life member, and liked pictures, shopping, crafts and traveling. She traveled frequently in later years of her life, often with a niece, nephew or grandchild along for the fun!

She leaves behind six children; Eric Wotton and his wife, Ann, of New York, Mark Wotton of New York, John Wotton and his wife, Karen, of Florida, Norman (Cecil) Wotton of New York, Ronald DePew of New York and Fred DePew of New York; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves three siblings, Esther Weston of Bucksport, Donald and wife, Donna, of Bucksport, Peter and wife, Ellen, of Orrington and a sister-in-law, Gail Spooner of Bar Harbor, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with military honors will be held 11 a.m., July 11, 2020, at Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport. Those wishing to remember Joyce in special way may make gifts in her memory to The Travis Mills Foundation, 747 Western Ave., Suite 1, Manchester, ME, 04351.
