Darrah Harrad Wilbur, 65, passed away Feb. 24, 2020, at his home in Orland. He was born July 24, 1954, at Plantation No. 8, the son of Charles D. and Phyllis L. Wilbur.
Darrah grew up in the Ellsworth area. Being the youngest of four siblings and born deaf ensured Darrah would grow up with fiercely protective brothers, creating a strong family bond that lasted for over 65 years. He attended Governor Baxter School for the Deaf in Falmouth, where he graduated in 1973. Upon graduation, Darrah returned home to Hancock, where he started what would become a lifelong career working in the blueberry industry. Darrah married Susan Conary on July 10, 1979, in Bucksport. Though Darrah and Susan never had children of their own, they spent the next 40 years raising fur-babies and being the best uncle and aunt they could be to their many nieces and nephews.
Darrah was the definition of a hard and dedicated worker. In his free time, he enjoyed watching movies, especially scary ones, and doing puzzles. He loved blueberries, crabmeat dip and lobster. He enjoyed playing in the pool and going on boat rides. Whether he was teasing his brother, aggravating his mother-in-law or playing with the kids, Darrah was happiest when he was spending time with family. Always the quiet observer, he will be painfully missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife and fighting partner of 40 years, Susan; brother, Thurston Wilbur and wife, Ruth, of Hancock, best friend and brother, Cornelius Wilbur and wife, Linda, also of Hancock; nephew, Tyke Wilbur and partner Cindy; nieces, Rhonda Ulichny and husband, Michaeljon, Valerie Dyer and husband, John, Jessica Davis and husband, Dan, Melissa Hudson, and husband, Matt, Shawna Conary and partner Andy; great-nieces, Aubrey, Olivia, Alli, Mercedes and Adely; great-nephews Dalton, Ryan, Masen, Maverick, Chandler and Kezlin; special mother-in-law Katherine Conary; in-laws, Sheryal and Lou Noto, Vicki and Ronnie Curtis, Alan Conary and partner Robin, James Conary; and good buddy, John Poulin. He will be missed by his fur-babies, Kayli, Pip and Squeak. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his twin brother, Harrad Wilbur; sister, Marcia Wilbur; half-brother, Raymond Wilbur; nephew, Layn Wilbur and father-in-law, Ernest Conary.
Graveside services will be held on Darrah’s birthday, July 24, at 10 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Orland. All who attend are asked to wear a Hawaiian shirt in his memory.
