OBIT-BocciaHANCOCK — Joan Ruth Boccia passed away peacefully in her sleep during the early morning hours of March 6, 2016, in Ellsworth.

She was born March 14, 1933, in Maspeth, Queens, N.Y., to Alfred and Mary Fenner (Hasci).

Joan touched many hearts. Those who had the opportunity of being graced with her presence were lifted by her captivating smile and warm, genuine, welcoming personality.

A graduate of Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, N.Y., in 1950, her early adult life on Long Island, N.Y., was spent raising her son, Steven, and daughter, Mary. Joan had a knack for making the simplest of times the best of times. She was very involved in the community and was a Den Mother of Cub Scout Pack 300 in Valley Stream, N.Y., for several years.

Joan moved in 1976 from East Islip, N.Y., to Hancock with her husband, Armando Boccia. She loved the quiet, laid-back lifestyle that coastal Maine offered, spending time gardening, taking trips to the lake with friends and family, and hosting wonderful dinner parties in their cabin in the woods. Among her many creative talents, her cooking was unsurpassed. She shared this talent with countless people after opening an Italian restaurant with her husband and for over 20 years had put her all into the local business known to many as Ristorante Armando’s.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Armando, and her two sisters, Harriet Demott and Margaret Burmester.

Joan is survived by her children: Steve Montague of Franklin; Mary Montague of Lakewood, Colo.; Ed Montague and his wife, Jennifer, of Sullivan; and Rosemarie Boccia-Young and her husband, Colby A. Young Jr., of Hancock. Joan is also survived by her five grandchildren, Cassandra, Annie, Julia, Savannah and Victoria as well as three step-grandchildren and her dearest friend, Mary Welsh of Sullivan.

A celebration of life will be held on March 26, 2016, at 1 p.m. at the former Armando’s restaurant on Route 1 in Hancock.
