Ellsworth
Lorene (Mrs. John T.) Rosborough, nee Comstock, died at her home on the morning of May 30, two months before her 100th birthday.
Born “on the farm” in Clarksville, N.H., Aug. 1, 1919, Lorene was the daughter of Eulalie Beecher and William Henry Comstock, who moved their family to Manchester, where Lorene graduated from Central High School and Hesser School of Business before joining the staff of the New Hampshire Fire Company. She married a young insurance agent at Fort Benning, GA., John Rosborough, turned U.S. Army officer just before he was sent to the front. After WWII, they relocated to Augusta, Maine, before settling in Ellsworth in 1952.
Lorene was predeceased by both her husband and a son, Duncan. She is survived by two children: Mark (Mary) of Ellsworth and Bonnie (John Batchelor) of Sherman, Conn.; four grandchildren: Ashley of Bar Harbor, Kaylie of Ellsworth, Sam and Anna of New York City; her sister Faith, who lives in New Sharon, and her daughter-in-law Anne of Otis.
After raising her family in Ellsworth, Lorene worked for several years in the Ellsworth High School library. A lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she volunteered over the years for both the First and the Ellsworth Falls Congregational Churches. She was known in the ’80s on Main Street for managing the Hancock Travel Agency, a business affiliated with J.T. Rosborough Inc. For some of her happiest years Rene was an active member of the Down East Outing Club and loved nothing better than a demanding climb in Acadia. She always found special satisfaction in her home, one of Ellsworth’s oldest, where she was cared for recently by a remarkable cadre of home care givers, led by Robin Harris of Mariaville.
A graveside service of remembrance and committal is planned for later in the summer.
