Northeast Harbor
Bert Sheldon Damon of Northeast Harbor, son of Persis Damon and the late Sheldon “Snicker” Damon, was surrounded by family when he passed away peacefully in his home on May 25, 2019. He is also survived by his wife, Melissa, his three children Molly, Luke, Emma and their spouses, his brothers Lesley and Robert, and the mother of his children, Rose. He is also survived by his three grandsons, one to each of his children respectively; Archer, Cole and Bertie, all living on Mount Desert Island.
Bert was a man of many trades who always liked an extreme challenge and, more importantly, an extreme solo challenge. Anywhere he went, he was always good at what he did and was determined never to fail. Bert rose through the ranks of S.R. Tracy and proudly made it to the brush crew prior to painting yachts in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Bert, alongside his parents, co-managed Damon’s Wharf in Bernard through the ’70s and ’80s. From there he started working on boats and took on the incredible responsibility of driving all night long through snowstorms running along the 18-wheelers with his Bison full of lobsters. No matter the journey, he would always get there on time. After his time with the wharf, Bert followed in the footsteps of his father and began commercial lobster fishing, which carried him through the years providing for his family, throwing lobster bakes and enjoying boat rides on the sound during a perfect MDI summer’s day. When Bert wasn’t working, he loved big canoe trips, massive snowmobile adventures, hiking Parkman Mountain, the freedom of riding his Harley and the peace of being surrounded by nature at his happy place — “Bog Cabin.”
Bert will always be fondly remembered by all of those who knew and loved him as someone who truly was as good as any of them and better than most of them. His family invites you to a celebration of life at Sargent’s Drive picnic area in Mount Desert on Sunday, June 2, at 11 a.m. Please bring a chair and a story. In the event of significant rain, the location will be at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor at noon.
