John Paul Chapin, Blue Hill, died peacefully from complications of a lengthy illness on Jan. 18, 2019. Born in Hartford, Conn., on May 14, 1940, he was the son of Clifford and Dorothy Chapin, who predeceased him.
John grew up in Great Barrington, Mass., was a graduate of Berkshire School and attended Princeton University. Retiring after 25 years with Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, he and his wife, Jane, moved to Bucksport, where he worked as business manager for the Bucksport Enterprise, Macleod’s restaurant and Northeast Historic Film, and where Jane resumed her work as a psychiatric nurse in the area. She died in 2002.
John, a self-described “class clown,” found his true calling when he discovered the art of theater though acting classes and performance with New Surry Theatre in Blue Hill. In 2006, he married Dindy Royster, and they subsequently appeared together in NST’s “The Gin Game” and “Love Letters.” His love of acting extended around the Blue Hill Peninsula and beyond with The Grand in Ellsworth, Cabin Fever in Deer Isle, the Belfast Maskers and others.
John is survived by his brother, Clifford Chapin II, and his wife, Mary Jane, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. John and Jane are survived by their four children John Chapin Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Montville; Pam Chapin Lunz and her husband, Jeff; Susan Powney and her husband, Jim; and Jennifer Chapin, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by Dindy and her children Molly Wanning Cooper and her husband, Daniel, Andy Wanning and his wife, Brenna Cohen, and grandchild Dinah Cooper.
The family wishes to thank the Hospice team and Rhonda Smith for providing exceptional care and comfort during the past year. They go far beyond ordinary concern for the well-being of their patient, and for the family as well, and they made it possible for John to stay at home during his last months.
